In all the communication GfK send to our community members, we'll always clearly state our identity and our contact address.
The key principles of professional market research are founded on honesty, objectivity, confidentiality and transparency. We are members of the UK Market Research Society www.mrs.org.uk. We follow their codes of conduct for market research and we are also adherents to the ICC/ESOMAR International Code of Marketing and Social Research Practice www.esomar.org
Research findings will always be reported accurately and never used to mislead anyone, in any way.
How we process your Personal data
Personal data are information that directly or indirectly identifies you as an individual, indirectly meaning when combined with other information, for example, your name, postal address, email address and phone number, or a unique device identifier.
How we share personal data
We will disclose your personal data only for the purposes and to those third parties, as described below. GfK will take appropriate steps to ensure that your personal data are processed, secured, and transferred according to applicable law.
Transfers within GfK Group
GfK is part of a global organization (the “GfK Group”), consisting of several companies in and outside the European Union, all primarily owned by GfK SE in Germany. Your personal data may be transferred to one or more GfK Group affiliated companies as needed for data processing, data collection and storage. We do not disclose personal data of participants to third parties outside the GfK Group unless the participants have declared their prior explicit consent for the specific purpose.
External service providers
GfK Mediaview is owned by GfK UK, perform certain data management services and facilitate members' membership of the online community:
- When customers first join the community we will ask certain personal information in order to facilitate invites, ensure quality sample, enable analysis of results and monitor the composition of the community.
- During membership of the community members will be asked to take part in activities, and their responses will be collated for analysis.
- Once a certain number of activities have been completed, members will be able to spend incentive points on items from the online catalogue.
- Members may at any time request to be removed from the online community
In each of these cases personal information will be shared with GfK Mediaview in order to facilitate this action. GfK’s external service providers are contractually bound to respect the confidentiality of your personal data.
Where necessary, we will commission other companies and individuals to perform certain tasks contributing to our services on our behalf within the framework of data processing agreements. We may, for example, provide personal data to agents, contractors or partners for hosting our databases and applications, for data processing services, or to send you information that you requested, or to incentive suppliers for processing of winners incentives. We will only share with or make accessible such data to external service providers to the extent required for the respective purpose. This data may not be used by them for any other purposes, in particular not for their own or third party purposes.
We will only disclose your personal data to public bodies where this is required by law. GfK will for example respond to requests from courts, law enforcement agencies, regulatory agencies, and other public and government authorities, which may include such authorities outside of the United Kingdom.
Unless you object to our processing of your personal data and/or demand erasure of your personal data (described under "your rights"), the following retention periods apply for the following categories of personal data:
Contact details used as part of the participation in an activity are stored for the duration of time which you remain a member of the community, plus 6 months. In the event that the running of the online community/project comes to an end, such details will be retained for a period not exceeding 6 months from the ending of the project. Thereafter, personal data will be securely deleted.
Your legal rights
Right to withdraw consent: Where the processing of personal data is based on your consent you may withdraw this consent at any moment.
Right to rectification: If the personal data we hold about you is incorrect you have the right to advise us so and to have the information corrected / updated.
Right to access: You have the right to access any personal data we hold about you and to request a copy of that personal data. You may obtain from us one copy, free of charge, of personal data we hold about you. We reserve the right to charge a reasonable fee for each further copy you may request.
Right to portability: At your request, we will transfer your personal data to another controller, where technically feasible, provided that the processing is based on your consent or necessary for the performance of a contract.
Right to object: You may object – at any time – to the processing of your personal data. We shall no longer process your personal data, unless we can demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds and an overriding interest for the processing or for the establishment, exercise or defense of legal claims. If you object to the processing, please specify whether you wish the erasure of your personal data or the restriction of its processing by us.
Right to lodge a complaint: In case of an alleged infringement of applicable privacy laws, you may lodge a complaint with the data protection supervisory authority in the country you live in or where the alleged infringement occurred.
Exercise your legal rights
GfK takes data security seriously. We apply an appropriate level of security and have therefore implemented reasonable physical, electronic, and administrative procedures to safeguard the data we collect from accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration, unauthorized disclosure of, or access to personal data transmitted, stored or otherwise processed. Our information security policies and procedures are closely aligned with widely accepted international standards and are reviewed regularly and updated as necessary to meet our business needs, changes in technology, and regulatory requirements. Access to your personal data is granted only to those personnel, service providers or GfK affiliates with a business need-to-know or who require it in order to perform their duties.
In the event of a data breach containing personal data, GfK will follow all applicable data breach notification laws.
No personal information is sought from or about you without your prior knowledge and agreement. Membership of the MediaView Community and undertaking of any activities therein is completely voluntary. You can decide to terminate your membership at any time. All you have to do is to submit the online unsubscribe form, or alternatively email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will do this for you. You are entitled either during an interview or subsequently to ask that part or all of the record of your interview be removed or deleted. Wherever reasonable and practical we will conform to such a request.
We try our best not to interview children without first getting the permission of their parents, though we cannot always guarantee this to be the case.
During Surveys, we process data, including personal data, in the background by technical means of cookies and similar technologies, as well as log-files.
Cookies: We collect your IP address, logging and digital fingerprinting.
We use other cookies and other similar devices sparingly and only for quality control, validation, deduplication, fraud preventation and to prevent bothersome repeat surveying. You can configure your browser to notify you when cookies are being placed on your computer. You can also delete cookies by adjusting your browser settings. We automatically capture information about your browser type in order to deliver an interview best suited to your software. We do no other invisible processing of data from your computer.
Log-files: During Surveys we collect data, including personal data, that is generally available about your device when it connects to the internet. This data includes, but is not necessarily limited to , the IP address (Internet Protocol address), the type and version of the operating system and browser, as well as, where possible, the device manufacturer and model and the date and time of each request to our servers.
We will not send unsolicited mail or pass on email addresses to others for this purpose.
On request the GfK client, or a mutually acceptable representative, may observe a limited number of interviews for the purpose of checking quality and data preparation. In certain cases, such as panels or in situations where a Respondent might be known to (or be in subsequent contact with) the Client, previous agreement of the Respondent will be sought.
Where a list provider has given us email addresses, they have verified to us that the individuals listed have a reasonable expectation that they will receive email contact. If applicable, within the survey itself we will indicate where we have obtained your email address.
We will not knowingly send emails to people who have not consented to helping in research.
If it is possible for the particular survey you are participating in, then it will explain to you how to stop and start an interview at any stage, and any information stored to enable this.
If you have been selected, that is at random, to participate in a survey because you have visited another website, this will be explained to you at the time.
